ODESSA -- The Lee boys soccer team pulled off the rare fete Saturday afternoon at Ratliff Stadium of beating Odessa High in a shootout. Thanks to two regulation goals from Spencer Weibusch and the game-winner in the shootout, the Rebels took a 3-2 victory in a key District 3-5A game.
"It was a big win," Lee coach Chris Bryant said. "For us it's a confidence builder anytime you can beat them in a shootout."
The shootout loss was the first for the Bronchos and goalkeeper Alonso Jimenez in district play since 2003. And Odessa High needed some late-game heroics to even force it.
The Bronchos held a 1-0 lead at halftime but Weibusch scored an equalizer in the 50th minute off an assist from freshman Montiel Urias. Weibusch struck again as he scored on a free kick in the 67th minute.
Odessa High tied the game with 17 seconds remaining but Weibusch again came up big in the shootout by striking a shot past Jimenez for the victory.
Lee is 9-8 overall and 5-3 in District 3-5A, while Odessa High fell to 8-8-1 and 4-4.
