ABILENE -- The Lee girls soccer team picked up a big District 3-5A road win Monday, as a late goal by Whitney Smith lifted the Lady Rebels to a 1-0 win over Abilene High. Lee is now 4-6 in district and will host San Angelo Central on Saturday at noon at Grande Communications Stadium in what could shape up as a big game. Central plays district leader Odessa Permian today, and a loss by Central means that a win by the Lady Rebels would force a tie between Lee and Central for the fourth and final playoff spot.
"This is definitely what we needed," Lee coach Amanda Melchor said. "The type of intensity we played with is what we need to make a run at the playoffs." Lee scored with about nine minutes remaining in game on Smith's free kick.
The defense and goalie Victoria Ramirez took care of the rest for Lee. Ramirez made her biggest contribution by stopping a penalty kick in the first half. Lee still has playoff hopes but needs to win next two games. "Everyone understood that there is no tomorrow," Melchor said. "They had to win and there was no choice."
